Is this normal (smoking)?!

Question: I have smoked on and off for 20 years...mostly on. In the last two years I was smoking about half a pack a day. The, about 2 months ago, I lost the desire to smoke and slowly cut down.

I'm not preggers, and I can't come up with any reason why a person would just not want to smoke, especially when ciggies are so addictive.

Lately it's been like 1 or 2 a day, and I haven't even had one in the last 2 days! I'm not complaining--I just don't understand why.

Any (decent) ideas?

Same thing has recently happened to me.

Has your life become more busy? When I'm bored I smoke a lot. Or you've cut back on drinking. I smoke a lot at the bar. Also, I don't smoke inside my house, so when it's cold outside, I don't really want to go out there and freeze just to have a cigarette. Maybe you're less stressed out?

Why not get a check up just to be on the safe side?

maybe something in your subconcious made you quit? like did something major happen in your life that might have affected you?

maybe ur body is telling you something and is rejecting them

I wouldn't complain. I don't think there's a good reason for this. However, maybe just like with many things often, you lost your 'taste' for it.

yes, i lost the urge 4yrs ago and have never looked back do yourself a big favour and stop altogether good luck?

Sounds like you could be doing more with your time and have less stress in you life. Has alot changed lately?

Maybe u've become desensitised to it or something.

Nout so weird as smoke!

well good luck to u...i smoked for 10 years and just one day decided to stop...i stopped now for 2 years without any cravings at all
and my wife is a smoker but it doesn't bother me as long as she doesn't smoke around me or in my car

You saying that you've smoked "on and off" suggests to me that you're not really a very hardcore smoker.

I smoke, and do (largely) enjoy it. But it does p!ss me off sometimes too, with shortness of breath, achy throat etc.

I think that, subconsciously, you've realised that the benefits aren't worth the drawbacks. Wish I would, too.

No amount of smoking is good. It robs you of breath . Quit.

that is rather odd if you think about it. nicotine is suppose to make you addicted. although you have to have the desire, the urge has to be there to want to smoke. mentally if you dont want it truly then you cant become addicted. most that smoke think they want it and therefore become hooked, but mostly because they wanted to be, not necessarily the nicotine. you should consider yourself lucky. there are alot of people in this world that wish desperately to give up smoking and cant. good for you! :)

well the only thing I can think of is that since you dont smoke much and its off and on-your body has realized what smoking does to it-before you have. I'm a smoker and when I try to quit- I realize how much cigs poison your system, maybe that..along with the fact the world is so anti-smoking-and you cant smoke inside anywhere and it being so cold out your body just gave it up.Just consider it a blessing from whomever you believe in and take this chance to quit for good.

your taste buds can change like this for instance when ive been sick after drinking loads of cider it puts me off cider and same with other spirits - i think the same thing has happened with you - i recon that because you aint smoked all the time your body recognises that it doesnt actually need the nicotine so you dont get the cravins - but this is a really good thing for you because it means you dont need to use will power to stop - if i were you id stop altogether from now on while its still easy - good luck.

Well be very happy that this is happening to you. I have smoked for 40 years and, sadly, never a day goes by that I don't want a ciggie! I can't explain what has happened to you. Maybe you don't have an addictive personality. However, cigarettes are incredibly addictive. Just stop now and be thankful.

do you believe in miracles? (you sexy thing!)

Quitting smoking is easy, I have done it a hundred times.

Time to quit (before it's too late).

Go see a doctor to be safe, but it might be nothing more than your body no longer craves ciggies, which is great!

I used to be a smoker with a similar daily habit to yours.

I gave up back in 1980, after realising that, if I was busy, I lost the need to smoke! This was brought home to me, when after spending 6 weeks locked in a no smoking environment (monitoring an international crisis) the first thing I did on being released from duty, was to reach for a cigarette, which I did not really want!

I have since found that I am not predisposed to addictive habits.

I'd not worry about it! Just give up while the going is good!

I can, these days, enjoy a single cigar, but not need to keep smoking........... although I have not bothered for some 5 years now.

There used to be an old TV cigarette commercial that asked, "Smoking more and enjoying it less?" Well I think that is your answer. cigarettes are not addictive because they taste good. I think that you were not as addicted as you may have thought and certainly not as much as some. I used to smoke a pack and a half every day, although I did not smoke in public or at work. I sure would suck them up at home in the evening though. One Saturday night during a blizzard, I checked my only pack and counted out three cigarettes and was actually thinking about going ot to buy more! I then realized that I wouldn't go out for anything else but my children and that I would not let anything so stupid control my life, so I wadded up the rest of the pack and never smoked again! I think that you had a similar "epiphany"!
Or maybe, you are just smart!
