Why do my piercings smell?!

Question: I have 2 holes on both of my ears, and when I take them off to clean them, they always smell really weird. Is that normal? What causes this?

It's a build up of body/hair oils, soap/shampoo, and water from showering and stuff. You need to clean the earrings AND holes frequently. I have two 14 gauge holes in each ear. I usually clean them like twice a week at least. I poor a bit of rubbing alcohol on the earrings (i wear hoops) while they are still in my ears and wiggle them around a bit to get the rubbing alcohol into the holes. Then, I'll take the earrings out and clean them well (again with rubbing alcohol) and dry them off. I also let the holes air dry for a few minutes. Then I put the earrings back in.

This is very common with people who have gauged earrings, but also can happen with regular piercings.

Also, consider the metal content of the earrings. Cheaper metals may tarnish if worn all the time and this can cause strange smells as well.

Must keep clean, your body has oils.

mild infection. It's the bacteria that creates the funk smell.

clean the earings with alcohol, and clean your holes with peroxide....do this everyday until they are better.

Clean them with alcohol

careful with the peroxide, it can cause canser if you use it so often.

ewwwwww! i know! it happens to me too. they always smell. clean them twice a week and they will not smell.

Yes, it is normal.
Gross, but normal.
It is because it is an orifice that is difficult to clean, and there is a build up of soap, sweat, or any number of things, as long as it isn't pink, or swollen or pussy it is fine.
The best way to prevent this is alcohol or removing them weekly to clean them.

well you might not be washing them good enough, or maybe it;s how or what your cleaning them with cuz hunny thats not normal

its hygiene matter...
bacteria i guess
