Bad sewer smell in house, feeling sick, is it safe to go to sleep & deal w/it in!

Question: For almost 2 hrs I've been slowly starting to feel sick to my stomach and just figured it on supper must've been a little "off". My 11 y/o daughter told me she was feeling nauseous and I told her I was, too. My 9 y/o feels fine, hard to tell what the baby feels, husband feels fine.
Then after Am.Idol got over and I got up to get ready for bed, I smelled a horrendous smell that made me think it was sewage or something. We rent here, the landlord lives almost 5 hrs away, so it's not like he can do anything at this hour anyways. But is it safe to go to sleep? You hear all these things about people who die in their sleep b/c of carbon monoxide poisoning and such, but I don't know much about sulphur. Should we close the bathroom doors and put towels down? Should we crack windows and crank up the heat? (it's only 15 degrees outside, here in Wisconsin!). The smell is upstairs, too.

Never heard of a house explosion due to methane gas backing up from the sewer or septic tank, but if you think you smell sewage just get out of the house and call the fire department FROM A NEIGHBORS HOUSE.

Turning OFF LIGHTS/APPLIANCE could be BAD... sparks ignite gas! (well, at least that is what they say about natural gas and propane... then again, what could be more "natural" than sewer gas :)

No Turn off all electrical power ----- open some windows and get out NOW. It is not only poison but can be explosive.

Yea, go to a hotel.

Call your landlord immediately -- he must be able to deal with an emergency.

NO, IT WILL NOT BE ALRIGHT UNTIL THE MORNING.

If it is any kind of gas, sewer or other wise it could be dangerous, particularly to the small lungs of a baby.

As your husband is feeling alright, have him go around the house and try and locate the smell. If it is coming from the bathroom or sink drains, it is probably sewer back up. The bacteria alone from sewage can cause major, permanent health problems.

What kind of sewer do you have? If you have city sewers, you can call them now -- they will have an emergency number.

Are there any gas lines going into the house? If it seems like gas, call the gas company's emergency number.

Worse come to worse, call the fire department.

But do something. And then get the family out of the house and spend the night in a hotel or with friends/family.

yeah only if you want to be in the hospital for days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GET OUT OF THE HOUSE

not a healthy situation you could catch a variety of diseases from breathing sewer gas
i would reccomend vacate the premise for the evening and get a professional assessment of house in am as for you go to ER of closest hospital have them check you out

Try calling the fire department to check into it. They can test for carbon or advice.....

Could be you have shallow sewers and they are backing up; soon to be a clog. If you have close neighbors, has any of them recently had the plumbers out? Could be your turn.

I wouldn't stay, if I was feeling nauseous,, your stomach knows when to leave.....

Sewer gas can cause sickness, even death.

Can't you call the landlord or the sewer company?
Where is the smell coming from?
Is it in your basement?

I would go to a motel or find someone that we could spend the night with. But you should call the landlord immediately. Maybe he would even pay for the motel!
