Do you think Animal testing for medical care is right? what do you think?!

Question: I have an assignment for school and i would like to use a blog reply as one of my for or against pieces. thankyou

Answers: I have an assignment for school and i would like to use a blog reply as one of my for or against pieces. thankyou

No, i believe that it is completely wrong for many reasons.
Firstly, although the science community use animal testing for a whole range of reasons including medical care, there is no proof that it is actually effective. It is true that there have been many successful experiments that included animal testing at some point during the investigation and this is what pro-test people use as evidence, but it is not clear that animal testing contributed significantly to the experiments and further studies into the case have revealed little or no useful contribution of animal testing in the final outcome of an experiment.
Furthermore if a drug is being tested that is intended for human use, then there is no guarantee that tests on animals would have the same result as those on humans. For example, the recent tragedy in America where volunteers for a drug trial died from the substance they were testing. The volunteers were allowed to test the substance because it had been previously tested on animals and had cause no or minimal harm to the animals and so was considered safe enough to try on humans. The result was death of volunteers. This shows that it can be unsafe to trust the results of animal testing, as other animals have a different make-up to humans and so can be expected to react differently to certain substances.
Animals have been scientifically proven to be able to feel pain, they have nerve endings and a pain centre in the brain just like us. Animals can feel stress, and this stress has a detrimental effect on their health (which skews test results aswell). Treating a pet in the way lab animals are treated would lead the owner to prosecution, but scientists who test on animals are not prosecuted. The animals in the tests: mice, dogs, rats; are often used as pets by people, they are exactly the same, and so if horrific treatment as a pet is prosecutable, so should be the painful, harmful and often invasive experiments that test animals go through. There is no difference to the animal, and what the animal feels is an important part of the discussion as it plays a direct part in the experiment.
Animals cannot give consent and so that in itself is an argument against the testing. That theory is applied to organ donations currently, if a person dies and they do not have a card to consent to their organs being donated to another person, the organs are not taken. This same principle should be applied to animal testing. The animals cannot give consent to their living bodies being used as a test subject, and so it is wrong for people to use them as such. People often exploit animals inability to speak back to us to believe that they are lesser beings in some way that have no rights, when this is simply untrue.
Moreover, animal testing is not the only way to test external medical cures. Currently scientists are developing a way to culture living human skin from stem cells that can be used for testing of medical creams that will give more accurate, human-based results for cures that will easily surpass the tests on animals.
In conclusion, animal testing for any purpose including medical reasons cannot be justified in any situation and so should not be allowed in modern day society where there are other options and there is very little evidence that it contributes to major breakthroughs of medicine.

its the same as using stem cells from an aborted fetus. Its good for the ones it helps but bad for the ones it hurts.

I think its rotten to use animals for this sort of thing when you have murderers and rapists who are in prison for life who could be used for it instead. These people serve no good and we are paying for their upkeep in prison so they should be put to some use. medical testing on them would be ideal!!
