Is alcoholism the only disease you can get yelled @ for having?!

Question: But... it's not a disease. I would be willing to call it a disorder though. I'm probably a little hard on alcoholics because there is no way you can't know by the time you start drinking that you have an addictive personality. I've never had a drink in my life and never plan to, because I know I'd become alcoholic.

Anyway to answer your question, I'd say STDs, drugs addictions, obesity, anorexia, depression. Not all diseases, but mostly disorders.

There's a good chance someone might yell at you if you get an STD.

nope try a std ( =

I'm sure there are many other conditions, such as other drug addictions, you can get yelled at for having. Maybe even tourette's.

But the difference between alcoholism and tourette's is that tourette's is an actual disease, addiction is not.

Edit: Addiction is a choice, not a disease. Choosing to drink is a voluntary behavior.

Despite the AMA definition, alcoholism shouldn't be classified as a disease. Alcoholism can be controlled by the individual simply by not picking up a drink. A true disease is beyond control of the individual such as cancer. That is the difference that causes people to yell at someone with such a disease.

Well, first of all, you shouldn't be yelled at since alcoholism is a disease. As such, it should be treated. Alcoholism is dangerous to yourself and others. You are not the only one affected by it, since your family suffers from the effects of it also. I would be particularly concerned if you engaged in drunk driving. I would urge you to get help, either through your doctor or through Alcoholics Anonymous. There is no reason for anyone to yell at you for having this disease, but it's your obligation to address it, and seek help. I might also add that there is no cure. However, many alcoholics have been able to stay dry for many years. You need a strong desire to conquer your illness, and a support system to help you along. Good luck and God bless!

I read the other answers, and those people are wrong. Alcoholism is an addiction, but it's also a disease, the reason being that the body has a physical dependence on alcohol. In other words, most people can have one or two or a dozen drinks, and they may get drunk and get sick, but they are not addicted; whereas an alcoholic cannot stop at one drink. One can lead to many, as their bodies do not process alcohol the way non-alcoholics do. Ask any medical professional and they will tell you this is true. Yes, self-control is a major factor in staying sober. But that addiction is always there, and that makes it a disease.

nope. borrowing my wife's credit card is not a disease but im always getting yelled at.

Alcoholism is a very complex and very misunderstood disease. Many lay people tend to have the thought that alcoholics are doing this to themselves and that they could stop if only they cared about themselves. This is totally untrue. Whilst some alcoholics might me able to affect their condition with enough will-power, many find it impossible to even cut back. It's misunderstood because people use their own experiences to judge others. They say that since they can have one drink and not two, then every one must be able to do that.

There are genetic traits that can predispose one to becoming an alcoholic and if a life event triggers a stressful reaction to something then the person with the disposition can become alcoholic and start drinking without the ability to stop.

Mental health is also rife in alcoholics and other addicts (yes, it is an addiction, but an organically based one).

Anyone who is 'yelling' at someone who is an alcoholic needs to take a good hard look at their life. I'm sure that they are not perfect either; the proof of that is that they are yelling at someone with a disease!!

If you, or anyone you know, is being yelled at for being an alcoholic, then you need to switch doctors if it's your doctor yelling at you or else just not be around those people anymore. Their heaping more hot coals on the fire of your life is not going to help. It seems to be common, but a lot of people think that if I just explain it to the alcoholic or if I just express my disappointment a bit louder then they'll stop drinking. The opposite usually happens, they drink more.

Hope this helps!

PS: Good luck!

BTW: Other medical conditions or diseases that incur peoples ire and wrath are: trans-gender disorder, sexually transmitted infections, HIV, personality disorders, mental health disease, albinism, leprosy, baldness, hyperhidrosis, obesity, dwarfism etc...
