Should I take someone elses prescribed medication just because my mother says so!

Question: Recently, as in 4 days ago, I went to the doctor and was told that I was sick with an inflammation of the lungs ands viral infection, both of which is similar to bronchitis, but not quite. he prescribed me medication: 1 over the counter, Zyrtec; 1 prescribed pills, Guaifenesin/codeine; and 1 antibiotic, azithromycin. I'm supposed to take each of the pills at night, before bed (they make me drowsy) After two days of taking MY prescibed medicine, my mother suggested that I take some of my stepdads medicine (I assumed she meant French medicine since he is of that etnicity) obediently I took it. now, tonight my mother gave me the bottle of cough syrup (stepdads medicine) for me to take bymyself. looking at the bottle I realize that ive been taking HIS presrcibed medicine. (now, he's the one diagnosed with bronchits)

my question to you is, which medicine should I take? mine or his? his works slightlybetter since my pills make my stomach hurt which keeps me up through the night.

You need to take your antibiotic (the azithromicin). Otherwise you might make yourself resistant to it. If this causes stomach upset, take with food.

The cough medicine is okay to take from your stepdad if you feel it works better.

Guaifenesin is an expectorant (like Mucinex) & codeine is pain killer/cough suppressant.

Feel better.

NO, you should go to your Dr. you never known if you end up having an alergic reaction and besides every body is different. The medicine itself may not be the cause for you to have complications but your body may reject something so don't risk it.

Not a good idea to take meds prescribed to somebody else.

ummm, u should never take anyone elses medications...even if they work better for u. see, the medicine u were prescribed was given to u just for u...and his medicine....if its an antibidoic....which isnt over the counter....then more than likely, it's a combination of lots of different things to best fit HIS needs.....so it really wouldnt work for u unless u were prescribed with the EXACT same illness, but still, i wouldnt take anybody else's medication without consulting ur doctor 1st. it could back fire in a couple of days....

In general, you shouldn't take medicine prescribed for someone else. It's just a bad idea for many reasons.

The problem with your question is you don't say what your stepdad's medicine is. That can make quite a bit of difference.

Talk to your doctor, or at least your pharmacist.

NO! Do not take someone else's prescribed meds. There are different types of bronchitis and different reasons people have/get it. Stay with the meds your doctor prescribed !
