Weird thing in back of throat past uvula?!

Question: Okay so in the back of my throat kinda downwards is a pink thing that looks like idk maybe lafft taffy that is hideous. It is past the punching bag thiing or the uvula. None of my friends can see theirs when they open their mouths and put their tongues down bit mine is sooo visible. I just started to be able to see it a few days ago. Does anybody know what this might be called? and is it dangerous to be so large?

It could be your epiglottis (a flap of cartilege that covers your larynx when swallowing to prevent food entering your airway). I also see mine when I look down my throat (I have assumed that is what it is). I was also concerned about it at first... mostly because it is so ugly and gross looking lol. A person's epiglottis can swell as a result of infection (called epiglottitis) but if it is always visible and you aren't sick/in pain then nothing to worry about. I think a small percentage of people have a larger epiglottis, and it is thus actually visible when you look in the mouth. I don't know if it's dangerous, but from reading on the 'net it seems that people with this may be more vulnerable to throat infections. I've been meaning to ask my doctor about this! Ask yours too if you have any concerns =)
