Do you HAVE to take Short-Term and then Long-Term Disability BEFORE applying for!

Question: I am SO confused. People tell you so many things. And one of the main things I am told is not to even consider approaching the SSA until after taking short-term and then long-term disability from work.
Thing is, I do know that I should and will likely be approved because of my condition (M.S.). So why shouldn't I apply now? Does anyone know anything about this?
Thank you so much.

PRESS, YOU are not alone out there, and these are absolute common issues. My hubby has ms as well. I can run some of these by him, since he retired on disability.
I am guessing from the prior reply, that having to take those first, are not so much social security, but disability issues via your employer. If that makes sense. The AMOUNT John gets through ssdi affects the amount that he gets as his disability pension.
Dealing with all of this, is very very hard. Don't beat yourself up, ok?
Also.. your emotions are understandably involved.. AND you need to be aware that some depression is directly involved with both the ms (not the obvious, "well, duh, of course I am depressed") but I believe is a known side effect to Avonex.

No you don't have to go on the short term and then long term disability first. My finace fell very ill and got put on SSI without ever being on anything else prior to that. If your doctors can prove that you are unable to work then they will approve you. Just make sure you have all your stuff together when you go in there. Doctors notes, any meds you are on..etc.

No you don't have to go on long term or short term disablity before applying. You can simply just apply!! Just make sure that you have all of the medication and the names and addresses to any and all of the doctors that you have visted. And keep in mind that SSA does not determine if you will qualify as disabled all of your proof of your disability is sent to DDS which is in Austin and they determine if you are truly considered as disabled. Also your disablity has to be expected to last for 12 months or more.
