Post-Op complications???!

Question: Almost 2 weeks ago i had my four wisdom teeth extracted. Not this weekend, but the last weekend, I noticed I had a rash (little red bumps) on my chest. Could this maybe be an allergic reaction to the IV sedation? This is what my mom thought, but i figured that it would have shown up earlier. The rash isn't ichy or irritating at all. Today, I noticed it is on my back also, then, tonight I was in the shower and noticed that it had spread downward on my breast. It's not bad where it spread. Could this be a reaction? I havent change my diet or anything. I just got done taking my antibiotics. I wasn't taking the perscribtion pain pills so they told me to take 2 Tylenol and 2 IbProfen together without the side effects. What do you think it is? my thyroid? I'm not too nervous about it, just a little concerned. if it keeps up like this I will go to the doctor. O yeah, I have been taking a clairitian 12 hour once a day now for two days.

From the way you describe the rashes, it definitely sound like you have a severe ALLERGIC reaction to the antibiotics. Antibiotics are notorious for doing that as a side effect. You can take OTC Benadryl for that rashes. Be on the look-out for any anaphylactic reaction that aside from the rashes or hives ( urticaria- itchy rashes) ; you might have laryngeal edema or swelling; thus causing respiratory problems such as SOB or wheezing. In that case, you have to go immediately to Emergency Room for some steroids. The rashes have nothing to do with your thyroid. The rashes indicate hepatoxicity and idiosynchratic drug reaction.

I developed a high fever, fatigue and generalized malaise and widespread skin rashes from Septra ( prescribed for UTI) from only two doses. The doctor told me to avoid that as it's quite poisonous or toxic for me. Drug toxicity can develop into a deadly septicemia or blood poisoning. I had to have Decadron ( steroid) injected and was on a short course of oral Prednisone before the fever and the rashes subsided.

In reply to your added details;

Benadryl would be the general drug of choice for any drug reaction. Plain Claritin or Claritin D ( extended dose) is the preferred drug for upper respiratory allergies. Claritin is most effective for sinus congestion. That's why relief is not forthcoming.

Benadryl is most effective for the dermatological reaction. It clears up the toxins; the rashes and itching. Just beware to take this at night as it can make you sleepy. In the mean time, flush out your system by drinking a lot of fluids. Make sure you note that antibiotic among your drug allergies to avoid future errors and further side effects.

if you start feeling better and the rashes are subsiding; there's no need to see the doctor.
You should notify the dentist though of your reaction. So that antibiotic can be wriiten down in your medical file for future reference. Try jotting down that particular medication. Im allergic to PCN ( penicillin ) and tetracycline and of course all sulfas which Septra is.

It could be a side effect from the Antibiotic. Most antibiotics have rashes as a side effect. I took one for 7 days and not until day 6 did I get a rash.
How is your throat? Has the rash spread? I would definitely call your doctor and let him know about this. It needs to be documented regardless. You might be allergic to the antibiotic.

Could be a side effect from your meds. Did you read the information sheet that came with your meds? Did you call your pharmacist and/or doctor and enquire of them?

It could also be eczema or a number of other skin rashes. You could even have suddenly developed an allergy to something you've not been allergic to previously.

I got a rash over my whole body after the 5th day of taking an antibiotic. I had to be on prednisone for 5 days to get rid of it.

Go to your MD on Monday & then let all MDs know you're allergic to that class of antibiotic.

Feel better & good luck.
