Why do our eyes need to be closed to "sleep"?!

Question: I don't know as they have to. I once dated a guy who used to give me the creeps. Whenever he feel asleep on my parents' couch, his eyes would be wide open, even though he was just snoring away. I never did figure it out. But he never seemed to suffer any ill effects from it.

because if your eyes were open they would dry out and get damaged....and since your unconscious when you sleep its kind of hard to blink
