Silly surgery question?!

Question: Can you take an Ipod into surgery?
I'm going in for an amputation revision and I want to have my music while I'm going under and coming back.
I'm not new to surgery and I know I get very emotional during the while thing. I don't panic, but between the fuss everyone makes and the drugs I start to cry before they even put me under.
I would rather have my music while they put the IV in. I hate having an IV put in. I am worrying about that more then having more of my leg amputated. I know I would take everything better if I could just listen to my music rather then having to focus of the operating room and everyone trying to keep you calm and getting you to count to 10 ( which doesn't work for me )
Do you think I would be allowed to take in my Ipod. I could get brand new earbuds and put the ipod in a sterile bag.

also I'm making the ultimate surgery playlist. Any suggestions? The first song is ZZTop " She's got legs"

You'd need to ask the surgeon and anethesiologist about this one, but I wouldn't expect to be able to take it into the ER. You might could get it as far as the outer door, though, or at least up until the point the iv is in and the first drugs have been pushed. In postop, though- you wouldn't likely be able to have it until you are fully alert. The only way to evaluate a patients alert status is to be able to talk to them and have them talk back to you. With buds in your ears, that would get interfered with. And it would get in the way if they had to do anything. Since the trouble mainly seems to be in the preop workup, though, I'm sure they'd let you wear it while all that was going on. And you could have it back as soon as you were fully awake again. Between that, though- it's not looking good. If you speak to the anesthesiologist, it may be possible to sedate you outside the OR enough that you won't care what's going on. As far as song suggestions- given your sense of humor with this- how about Rod Stewards "Hot Legs"?

Edit- The reason you took the teddy into the OR is because you were a child. I hate to tell you this, but that teddy was removed and placed under the gurney as soon as you went to sleep. It returned with you to the recovery unit, and a nurse slipped it back into your arms before you fully woke. We do it all the time. Once the anesthetic takes effect, you won't be listening to anything anyway- and it will pose an infection risk, as well as a possible interference if they need to intubate you. As an electrical device, it can also interfere with some equipement. Infection control folks would have a cow if they found out. Like I said, you can sure ask- and you can likely have it for the preop work, and get it back once you are awake. In between that, prepare for a no answer.

I don`t know, but a man just coming round after surgery said to the nurse " I don`t like the 4 letter word that the surgeon used ". The nurse said " Which word was that ? ". He said " OOPS ! ".

I would suggest for your playlist:
"The first cut is the deepest"
or
"You're so vein"
Hope that helps.

probably not since the OR is a sterile environment and only you know where your ipod has been. Then there is the question of what to do w/ it when you are under (asleep) it could get lost very easily. You may be able to take it into the pre-op area and the have your parents or someone w/ you take it when you are ready to go into the OR. Check w/ the Anesthesiologist and OR staff they have control of what goes into the OR and what does not.
