Water Boil Advisory?!

Question: Lately we've gotten a couple boil advisories. Well, I have a refridgerator that has an ice cube maker and dispenser. Should I throw away all of the ice cubes or not bother. Will it affect the ice? Should I just turn off the ice maker until the advisory is over? So say I do turn it off, should I still get rid of the ice cubes made while the advisory was in effect? What are your opinions?

Most modern refrigerators have filters built in, but since they only filter out organisms down to a certain size micron, I would throw the ice out as a precautionary measure. Using bottled water would be best for direct consumption (to include brushing your teeth), and you must avoid swallowing untreated water while bathing or showering. Run all taps for a few minutes before using water following an advisory will help flush contaminated water from your system.

Contaminated ice is a very common way to get sick. People know that they shouldn't drink the water, but don't think about the ice. Few germs are destroyed by freezing.

You should turn off the ice cube maker, get rid of the cubes, and probably clean the mechanism. It is better to be on the safe side...

Boil some water, let it cool, and then make cubes in a tray.

Yes, throw out the ice, turn off your ice maker and disinfect your ice cube holder.

Yeah get rid of the Ice...it doesn't take long to make new ice anyways. Your refrigerator should have a filter of some kind. Normally that filter will help prevent any of that getting through, depending on the last time your changed it. I would throw the ice away anyways. Good question.
