Anyone do Health and Social care?!

Question: I just wanted to hear from people who do it or have done it - any level/course it doesn't matter - and what you've gone on to do and how helpful it was, and what was involved in doing the actual course. Basically any info would be great. Thanks! :-)

Sadly, dear lady, it wasn't an option when I was at school, but I have been the position where I've been a mentor for students who have opted to take this course of education/learning.

From my experience, it gives you a great foundation on which to base further education if you're really serious about caring for/looking after people.

As others have already stated, it does consist of a lot of work ... primarily because there's such a lot to learn.

What you must bear in mind is that it gives you an overall grounding. Once you decide ... if you decide ... to go into a care setting ... either Social Services, Nursing, or private Residential setting, you will undoubtedly go on to specialise in a particular vein. Different types of clients/patients/residents/consumers have different needs, and there are different laws governing how caring for them must be carried out. (Don't worry about that. On the type of Health and Social Care course that you'd do in school, you won't be expected to go in depth into the law aspects. That comes later.)

Undoubtedly, you'll find that the course consists mainly of 'theoretical' application of what you've learned. The practical side comes more from Work Experience that your school will be able to help you with.

Unfortunately, I'm no longer in the position where I was able to offer Work Experience to students, having been retired on grounds of ill health myself, but what I will tell you is that from the 'employer's' point of view, it soon becomes apparent which people are actually interested in making caring their chosen course in life. (I won't go into detail, but some Work Experience students showed that their heart wasn't really into caring for people less fortunate than themselves. To some it was little more than 'having a laugh'. This certainly will not be tolerated in any worthwhile establishment.)

If you want any further information, or feel that I may be able to help you in any way, please don't hesitate to contact me via email. (Click on my avatar/photograph, and you'll see that you can contact me that way.)

I wish you the very best of luck in determining whether this course is for you.

not me sorry

I'm just finishing in yr 11 i am doing a Btec 1st diploma in health and soical care... it came in very handy with my work experience although i dont think that i will ever really use the qualification. Although it is a good qualification to have as employers know it envolves knowing how to deal with people communication skills and such.

I am doing Health and Social care at college and am in my first year, i am on level 3. It is a good course to do if you are interested in going into a job which involves caring for people but it is a very hard course with lots of work.
Good luck x

I do :)
It's a good course, actually.
There's a lot of written work.
And I mean a lot..
But it's all worth it at the end..
