What test do they do for glucose and thyroid?!


Question: I was told by the doctor today that I need to go in tommorrow and get a test for Glucose and Thyroid and to not eat or drink after midnight (fast) before the test. What do they do for these test? Do they just take blood or plasma?


Answers: I was told by the doctor today that I need to go in tommorrow and get a test for Glucose and Thyroid and to not eat or drink after midnight (fast) before the test. What do they do for these test? Do they just take blood or plasma?

They will take blood, and make you drink a drink with lots of sugar, and the draw blood at like half hour intervals, for the next 2hrs.

They will take blood out of your arm and just measure it for glucose - diabetes and thryoid - looking for either hypo or hyperthyroidis. Plasma is blood with the solid tissues removed.

It's a blood test. Usually they will do a fasting glucose and a TSH. Some doctors will go into it more and also test A1C and insulin and for the thyroid...TSH, Free or total T4, Free or Total T3, and an antibody test. A monrning test is prefered for the thyroid, so you've got that covered. Far too many people test thyroid at the wrong time of day.
