Question about Goiters?!

Question: For about a week now I've had this throat problem where it feels like my throat is a rubber band and its being stretched to the max and sometimes it feels like my throat is being twisted and other times it feels like something is in my throat. I decided to do a google search on my symptoms and at first I was thinking I was having a thyroid problem but I'm only 25 yrs old so I'm kind of young to be having a thyroid problem then I came across an article about goiters and I have most of the symptoms. I don't know alot about goiters but I was talking to my mom on the phone about it and she was telling me that my dad and my grandma (my dad's mom), and my step sister (my dad's daughter from his first marriage) had goiter problems. My question is are goiters genetic? Also what can be done about a goiter? This is kind of scary cause I never heard of a goiter until this morning. Please tell me anything you know about goiters?

I found some great sites for you:

http://www.endocrineweb.com/goiter.html

http://www.netwellness.org/healthtopics/...

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/...

I'm sure you could find more. I'd read as many different sites as you can handle because you'll get the best range of knowledge that way. Alot of people on here might say that it's a salt deficiency but that's rarely the cause of goiters here in the US because salt isn't the only thing that has iodine in it. I'd read up and educate myself before going to the doctor so you'll know exactly which questions you want/need to ask him/her. Good luck!

Make a doctor appointment and let a professional make the call.

I can't say i know much about goiters... I do know that they're an abnormal growth.. This may be offensive and sound bad but the first time i heard about goiters was on Rotten.com

Go see your doctor... but for now... Google is your bestfriend.

Goitre is cured by substituting iodine in your salt intake it is very important...............lack of iodine causes problems in growth

Thyroid Neck Check: self exam for goiter and nodules
? Hold a mirror in front of the area of the neck where the thyroid gland is located. This area is just below the Adam's apple and right above the collarbone. (Note: The Adam's apple is not the thyroid location.)
? Tip the head back.
? Take a drink of water and swallow, watching the neck during the process.
? Check for any bulging or protrusions. If any is detected, call a doctor for a check up
