Exposed to chickenpox... now I have a fever?!

Question: I was exposed to chickenpox a week ago (never had them or vaccination) and I have just started running a low grade fever. Is this a coincidence or is it safe to assume I'm going to get them soon? I'm a teacher. Should I stay away from my class since I have a fever? I feel fine. Just achy and a little hot.

If you've never had it before, you're at a high risk of contracting it. It's much more serious if you contract it for the first time as an adult. I got it when I was 21 and believe me, it was the sickest I've ever been in my life. I think to be on the safe side you should stay home for a day or two, just to make sure you don't have it. I'd go to the doctor as well.

Yep, it's almost certain that it's on the way in and this is the incubation period, especially if you've never had it before or been vaccinated. A low grade fever and aches and pains a week after being in touch seem too much of a coincidence but you'll know soon enough. But on the bright side, you'll never get it again and you can visit as many sick kids as you want.

Oh boy! I hope you don't, but it's possible. If you don't, I hope you get vaccinated soon. I work at a school too. Your students should have already been immunized, but you probably have something considering you have a fever. I'd take tomorrow off. I had to vaccinated as an adult. My sister didn't. It was ugly.
