As someone with ADD, I can appreciate your situation. Many regular doctors simply don't know enough about it to understand it properly, plus the abuse of the drugs (ADD drugs are considered Schedule II narcotics) has made it even more difficult for people with real cases of ADD/ADHD to obtain the meds they need.

Go see a psychiatrist. They are trained extensively to understand the disorder (it is caused by the neuron pathways in your brain not working properly, which can seriously effect your short term memory). If you haven't been diagnosed before, you'll need an evaluation done.

I went to see a psychiatrist (he was also a neurologist/neurosurgeon) after being rejected by a couple of regular doctors who simply didn't understand ADD. I went through almost 5 hours of testing and got a proper diagnosis. I've been taking a small dose of Dexedrine for years. The drugs changed my life completely. I now see my psychiatrist strictly for my meds.

Good luck.

Going to the docs and asking for a specific medication is (should be to most docs) a red flag for drug abuse.

Maybe you don't have A.D.D.? Don't ask him for it ask him about it. If you ask him for it he will just think your a pill popper.

First off...its spelled Adderall.
Second...your doctor probably feels that it is an inappropriate drug for you...either that it will be ineffective in your condition, or because you walked in and asked for it and this reminded him of the 500 addicts that came in and asked for it last week.
You should always assume that the doctor knows something that you don't.
And yes, some kids do take Adderall and other drugs at parties. Many also engage in Pharming...stealing drugs, mixing the contributions of each partygoer, and sorting them by color...then taking a handful of pills of a color. I used to see a lot of these kids (even the ones using Adderall without needing it) when I was a Paramedic. Now that I am a Nurse...I don't see nearly as many. Take a minute and think what that means.

The doc probably has some specific reasons. There could be better drugs on the market that treat your condition.

If you want a specific drug, talk to your doctor about why you want it. He will go over the pros and cons of the drug and should be able to tell you if it will work. They are leery to give people a specific drug just because they ask for it, those are signs of a prescription drug abuser.

**No one is saying you are abusing drugs, people the responders are giving you the viewpoint of the physician.

***Have a psychiatrist test you for ADD then, if you fit the profile you may be given a prescription. Just because many people in your family have it doesn't mean you will AUTOMATICALLY have it too. Genetics does weird stuff.

****Go see a psychologist then - they can refer you to a psychiatrist.

There is testing that can be done to show you have A.D.D. or A.D.H.D., if you test (+) for either of these disorders, your doctor will certainly treat you for this. If you just go in and say you have something and self-diagnose yourself, then no, they probably won't just give it to you unless they KNOW you need it, and the reason is because it's so highly abused, like you say. Kids get it and snort it because there are so many kids diagnosed with it, that they get it, and then their friends offer to pay them money for it to get "high" off of it.

Ask your doctor to get tested to see if you indeed have it, if you do, you'll be treated accordingly.

Adderall is highly addictive. It may not always be the answer.Get another Dr's opinion always.
I don't like taking it, it makes me feel jittery at times. I seem to be more sensitive to smells, sometimes makes me nauseous.
