I keep feeling really breathless, like I can't breathe deep enough?!

Question: I feel like I have to yawn in order to fill my lungs, and once I've made myself yawn it eases for a couple of minutes. I can feel it sort of closing up inside and getting tighter, which then makes me need to yawn or breath very deeply to clear this feeling.

I went to hospital about this one night as it was bad - they did all the tests, came back as nothing wrong. I've never smoked and am not overweight, don't feel stressed or anxious about anything. This breathlessness has been on and off for about 4 or 5 days now. Sometimes it starts if I'm just watching TV or on the computer.
Hope someone can help, it's driving me mad!

I wonder if it could be connected to iron deficiency? Iron is needed to make red blood cells, which in turn carry oxygen around the body.

I had similar symptoms to you, felt as though I couldn't breathe deeply enough. I was also getting tired a lot. A blood test showed that I was iron-deficient, and now I take a ferrous sulphate tablets, and the tiredness and the breathing problems have gone. I hope this helps you.

Another thing to consider is whether it might be a symptom of the peri-menopause, the run-up to the menopause, something that doctors apparently often miss. Lots of funny things start happening, they come & go, and are nothing to worry about. Try googling this for more info, or there are some good books around.

I can't say what it is - but a steam inhalation with menthol and peppermint oils might ease it.

you should really see doctor my friend, this could be serious.
dont wait phone the doc now

this ALWAYS used to happen to me until i had a big glass of ice ice cold water, drank some. that did the trick for about a day, then the next day it came back, i got a little relaxed, and asked my sister to take a big glass of ice water again, but this time pour it on my face while i was awake but half-asleep phase.

i've never had that breathing problem since.. so go and try that.

If you cant breath i would advice you to go to the hospital or a doctor straight away .

This sounds like you are having panic attacks. A classic sign is feeling that you can't take a full breath. This makes you even more breathless. Are you going through a difficult time? When you start getting upset that you cannot get a full breath, it gets you really uptight, and you tend to be unable to relax and breathe normally. Things usually escalate and you end up in a total panic. Try to think back to when you first began to feel like this. Most panic attacks can be "solved" if you can identify the trigger that set you off in the first place. If you are totally miffed, take a wee trip tae the doc's and he/she will give you a couple of week's course of relaxing pills. Good luck. I used tae get panic attacks years ago, after a course of pills and a wee shot of relaxing techniques, I wiz like a new person!!

It is a case of deduction and elimination. It actually could be gastric, acid leaking into your lungs, causing difficulty in breathing and it can be very sporadic. I agree with the relaxing techniques, worrying and panic can make things worse. If you feel a bit of a cold coming on mucus can build up also inhibiting breathing.
