UTI in children?!

Question: My daughter is 3~ just newly potty trained~ she had a uti(her first) and the Dr. Told me that I should get some testing done on her kidneys which would be pretty traumatic for her since she is soo young! They would catheder her and take pictures of her kidneys to make sure they are functioning correctly. Has anyone ever had this done to their child after just ONE uti? Should I wait to see if she gets another uti again before putting her through such a traumtic experience!

Also~ I scheduled this appointment at the hospital and went and they nurses in xray where this was going to happen acted like it was weird that they wanted this test done after just One uti. So I left to think it over a bit more before having this test done!
Thanks for any input ont this~ it is making my tummy hurt from worrying

My daughter had one at 3 years old also. It is already so heartwrenching to watch your child go through that. With her short antibiotic treatment, it was gone and hasn't returned. If she is newly potty trained it could be so many things! For us, I think it was the first time she tried to wipe (poo) without telling us, but of course, we can't be sure.

I would definitely wait for a recurrance. If she hasn't had any problems for 3 years, she deserves a chance. Our pediatrician told us that if it came back, or happened again, that's when they would think about doing the whole workup. He felt that there were lots of reasons that they get them and it usually doesn't require all the trauma of the testing.

My advise is to do the antibiotics. Then continue to watch her. You know what to look out for now.

Wipe carefully from front to back, not back to front, ,(we liked the flushable wipes, just on bum, not on front) give her enough water or juice, cut out bubble baths, encourage her to have a regular bath every few days, don't let her wear her favorite panties for more than a couple days at a time (this is all things you probably do, but are things that are always mentioned in UTI articles.) That way, everything stays clean and she has the perfect condition for healing and staying healthy.

I know nothing about UTI's in children (other than I know of children who have had one). I would go for a second opinion before doing something so drastic.

oh no!! well UTI's can lead to many horrible things, like a kidney infection, or infection to the urethra, or any area that the urinary tract is around......its really up to you to wait or not, i meen she could have an infection of her kidneys, and that wouldn't be good if you waited around to find that out, but she may not and go through all those test for nothing.....its a hard decision! good luck (sorry im not much more help)

My much much younger little sister ( I was already 18 when she was born) used to get UTIs all the time when she was 3+. The most the doctor ever did to her was run some blood test and things of that nature. Its very normal for young kids to get UTIs. She is most likely not wiping good enough (that's what the doctor told us). It might be a good idea to get some of those wet wipes so she is getting everything, or have a little talk with her to re-enforce wiping habits. I would defiantly not have that done unless she starts getting a string of UTIs. Good luck!

I would def. get a second opinion! I myself had a few and they are not fun i have also had a catheder in for almost two weeks and it was very painful and i can only imagine what this would be like for a three year old! I would talk to a diff. doctor and see what he or she says. Good luck!

No. I have two girls. Their UTIs turned out to be from wiping the wrong way. I think your doctor is trying to protect himself in case your little girl was sexually molested and he didn't realize it (of COURSE she wasn't...please don't think I would even suggest it!). Doctors are so afraid of lawsuits any more that common sense has flown out the window.

Treat the UTI. Teach her to wipe from front to back. Buy some of those premoistened wipes that are made to flush...they're easier for little girls to clean themselves with. Get a new pediatrician, if necessary, and consider all that testing if this becomes a repeat problem.

Trust your instincts, Mom.
