Blood drawing??!

Question: ok uhm i never really minded getting a shot or needles really but a few months ago, i had to get my blood drawn n i was just nervous but knew it would be over so i wasnt all that freaked out about.

so when the doctor put the needle in, i fainted. then i woke up, was leaving, and fainted again. then i woke up again, and went into the elevator with my parents, only i dont remember getting out and i remember waking up outside. sooo i guess i passed out three times. it as HORRIBLE.

ok now, i have to get a blood test tomorrow morning and im totally freaked out right now because i dont want to faint again. any tips on how to prevent it please??

p.s. i cant eat anything during 12 hours before the test. but i can drink water.

Fainting during or after a blood test draw is rare but certainly not unheard of.

The next time, tell them about your concern and ask that they let you lay down to have the blood draw done. In fact, insist.

After the draw, lay there for a few minutes and try to relax. Don't get up unless there is someone there to help you. Sit on the edge of the bed for a minute or two. Make sure there's someone to walk you to the car.

Good luck.

i hate getting blood takenn! i always get light headed and i faitnted once. what i usuallyy do when i feel like im going to faint is bring a granola bar or something to eat right after the blood is taken and i feel fine. idk iff you can doo that because you cant eat anything for 12 hours, but you probably fainted because you hadnt eated for twelve hours.

Well honey just remember to have some orange juice and some crackers/cookies ready after you get done with the test. it sounds like you just got light headed and it happens quite often after people have blood work done. Just stay calm and drink plenty of water. Good luck!

The #1 cause of fainting during/after a blood draw is because the patient hyuperventilates. I work as a phlebotomist (blood drawing person) and I see a lot of people hyperventilating due to stress and worry...

To prevent hyperventilating (and then fainting) regulate your breathing. It might help to have someone (either the phlebotomist, or someone you bring with you) to talk to you and tell you when to breathe in slowly and when to breathe out slowly - that way they are helping you regulate your breathing.

Remember to tell the phlebotomist that you have passed out in the past - then he/she will know to watch for the pre-signs of passing out.

well i do blood draws every day in college, and they also get done on me almost every day, so i dont think they are that big of a deal, bc u cant really feel it, only advice i can give, i not to sike yourself out about it, and whatever you do breath during it, and DO NOT look.do not watch it being done, have someone talk to youwhere you arent in the view,u will be ok
