How do you find the vein?!
Question: When you go to get your blood drawn, how do you find the vein when you can't see it? I know phlebotomists feel for it but usually they see it right? ok so I know its harder to find them on obese people. What about African American people? Do you see the vein? Has anyone ever had a hard time? so my question is...

You may have to feel for it.
you should be able to see it... you must be fat.
I have been a phlebotomist for over 13 years so I know a little about veins. You never go for the ones you see. You go for what you Feel. Obese patients and African American people are not any different than any one else. If I had to say who was the hardest to get blood from it would be infants and the elderly. People who are dehydrate are harder also.
Why in the world are you worried about such a thing? Just let the nurse or phlebotomist worry about it. You're not talking about shooting up illegal drugs, are you, because that would be a really bad idea.
lol ok, well first off if you've ever seen anyone tap their arm (like druggies in the movies), it's to raise the vein closer to the surface of the skin, which makes it easier to see, no matter the color of your skin. Now, of course a very obese person it would be harder to use this technique. I'm over weight, but I'm half black and half irish, so I have light skin and I can see my veins, and I never get my blood drawn so on that note I wouldn't be too sure. But that's why knowing what your doing is important, they know where the vein is, just not how deep so if someone is overweight they might have to stick it in a bit deeper.
Yeah. You take the needle and keep sticking it in different places 'til blood comes out. Then you know you found the vein.
