They are not contageous, becuase they are not a disease. That's the usual misidentifying that the medical profession uses all the time because they think people are too stupid to get the real message. Of course, it helps keep people stupid, so it works to the benefit of doctors.

I think host factors are more important in etiology of dental cavities. What one eats or drinks, dental hygiene, smoking etc. are important in deciding even if person gets the organism. It is only possible to take care of our own teeth, one can't avoid altogether kissing his/ her love for fear of cavities!
