Why can hospital staff/Er staff be SO rude to their patients?!

Question: I went to the ER today with an asthma problem, and I expect all the staff/nurses to be hectic and rushy, but some of them are outright rude. This one, didn't care at all, and was just like "knock knock," hi, yep, gr8, take ur stuff, xtray lets go, over there, k stay in ur room, :door slam," they couldn't care less, and they this one in particular acted like a jerk.

I was all out of it, and even got lost on my way back from the x-ray room, LITERALLY lost, and by the time I came back the nurse looked at me like I was a freak, for getting lost. The look I got was like "wtf?"

I don't understand where this rudeness and arrogance comes from?

Is it a power trip of some sort? Are they looking down at the patients?

It's funny how when you're sick, running a fever, having health issues, and you're out of it, for a legit reason, these people still judge you.

I let it go, and didn't let it get to me, because I had to focus on me getting better, but I wanted to smack the B((ch.

Having worked in a hospital before, I can certainly sympathise with your situation but what you must try to understand is that the nurses and hospital staff do not get off from being rude, it is not a power trip, these people have a very difficult job to do and thanks to budget cuts in healthcare services and lack of proper staffing they are put under an enormous amount of pressure constantly, particularly in the ER room where people come in for all sorts of reasons, some of which are rather trivial and other times life threatening. This excessive amount of stress makes people rather uptight and tetchy at times. Many staff experience abuse on a daily basis - from other staff, patients and their relatives. Remember the hospital is a place where emotions run very high - patients are worried about dying, the staff live in fear of accidentally killing a patient and then to add to that mess you have the fears and problems of the relatives of the patients. Plus you have all the pressure from middle management. Most don't mean to be rude. We are only human after all. I have heard that people should leave their personal problems at the door when they come into work. That is like saying they should be automonous robots in the workplace. I would like to know how you can be totally inpersonal when you are going through a divorce or a bereavement, etc. The important thing is that the hospital staff get the job done and the patient goes away better!!!

Another thing, what people consider as being rude is very subjective interpretation. So where do you draw the line. A look can mean anything. It might be their usual expression which you took as an insult. Patients should be more understanding, less critical of the staff. I know that sometimes rudeness is inexcusable but in this case I really suggest you should overlook this minor incident and not bother with reporting it to the hospital adminstrator. That is wasting everybodies time. When lives are at stake trivial matters will get a lower priority and the hospital adminstrator will immediately take sides with the nurse anyway. Don't be so sensitive next time.

the simple reason is becuse the can

A hospital is a good place to stay away from. Especially if you're sick.

it might just have been cause you were cranky

but most likely
its cause theyre cocky.
and if youre young, they'll prejudice you for that.

and they've had asthma paitents before so i guess they could be bored. not that the attitude is then justified

Medical staff should never be so flippant, and you should report them to the hospital administrator. Unfortunately, a lot of people who work in medicine become so callous about the life and death situations they encounter every day that they forget they are dealing with people...not just diseases and trauma. It's a sad trend that really needs to change.

A good physician, nurse, or technician treats patients with respect and dignity while working to help the person. The people you had the misfortune of dealing with have to be reminded of that. Once when my son was about 8 years old, he was very sick and weak and could hardly even move from the couch. I took him to the ER and the staff was OK...but the doctor was the most arrogant *** ever. When he came in through the curtain, he was wearing a fake smile and started an exam while asking me "so what's going on here?" I told him my son's symptoms, and said "he can't even walk" - because he'd been having to crawl to the bathroom since he was too weak and in so much pain. The doctor covered his mouth in mock surprise and said "He can't WALK? His legs don't appear to be broken...maybe he CAN walk?" I was angry and shocked, so I just cowered and said, "well...yes...it just hurts when he does". I can't even remember the rest of the conversation because I was so stunned by his lack of caring.

Again...complain to the hospital administrator. Sounds like the ER and maybe other departments need to learn some compassion.
