1. slower motility of the gut
2. inadequate roughage
3. poor mobility
4. dehydration
5. 'holding on' to prevent incontinence
6. Morphine derived analgesic drugs. eg Co-Codamol, tramadol

Well I am an older person ,Who seems to be the other way inclined ,

Do we?

no idea

maybe because the muscles arent as strong as they once were???

Well as you get older your bowels start to slow down as does everything else and usually they are on all different types of medication which affects their bowels.

Body fuctions don't work the same as when your younger!

They do not incorporate enough fiber in their diet.

Because thier body produces less fiber which hels keeps our digestive track regulated!

Becuase they are ready to kick the bucket.
Didnt oyou see the movie

yes because they drink less water and are less active so when you are less active your insides get sluggish

When it comes to constipation, the causes are pretty universal regardless of age.

Not enough fiber in the diet.
Not enough fluids.
Not enough physical activity.

My mother is 78 and has a tendancy to get diarrhea more than constipation, which is also not uncommon as we age because our digestive systems become more tempermental.

As most older people can tell you, they can't eat they the way the could when they were younger, and in most cases, it's because many of the foods they were able to eat when they were younger would cause them diarrhea as an older person.

they sit on their arses all day nothing can get out.

They eat less and not always a balanced diet. Their fluid intake is down which they need to have so the bowels work properly. They are less active, which makes their bowels sluggish. They need to stay as active as they possibly can. Alot of older people take some type of fiber additive be it in pill form or powder. You will also see them drink prune juice or eat prunes. I know it doesn't sound the greatest but it is much healthier than being constipated and taking a laxative which can cause severe cramping. I hope this helps you better understand.

Generally there are 2 main reasons, their fluid intake is often too low and they take insufficient fibre in their diet and often too little fruit and vegetables.

How old. I'm 47. I never get constipated.

Many people believe they are constipated, or irregular, if they do not have a bowel movement every day. However, there is no right number of daily or weekly bowel movements. Normal may be three times a day or three times a week depending on the person.

Making sure you have an appropriate diet. High fibre foods should include beans, whole grains, and bran cereals, fresh fruits, and vegetables such as asparagus, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and carrots. Making sure to limit foods that have little or no fibre such as ice cream, cheese, meat and processed foods.

Making sure your drink enough water, and fruit juice, clear soups.

Making sure also you move as much as you can. Exercise will help to get the bowels moving too.

In addition the urge to have bowel movement should never be ignored either.
