How can I get my uncle to quit smoking?!

Question: my uncle constantly smokes. it's always his "resolution" to quit, but he never does. he recently had another son, and my aunt is very concerned that the 6 month old baby will get sick when he is around him. how do i get him to quit without being too persistent? I do not want him or the baby to end up sick.

You really cannot force someone else to quit smoking because they'll just become sneaky about it, or get angry (which causes more stress which may lead to more smoking), or continue to smoke just out of spite. You can tell him you'd love it if he could TRY to stop smoking or at least cut down so his family didn't have to deal with second-hand smoke but that's just communicating that you'd support him. If he does finally decide he want to quit, you can ask if there's anything you can do to support his quitting (buying him lollipops to suck on instead). Most of the ex-smokers I know didn't want a lot of outside involvement when they were quitting, they just wanted to do it quietly and on their own almost like it was a secret (I think so if they backslide, no one feels let down or will chastize). It's hard to quit smoking and most long-time smokers are physically and psychologically addicted and need to ween off slowly, often with the help of the patch or some nicotine gum or something else. But the smoker has to have the will of his own to quit (quitting "for someone else" isn't usually enough motivation), he needs to want to quit or else it won't work for very long. Your aunt should be adamant that if he must smoke, he has to go outside (not just somewhere else in the house) to smoke. One of my coworkers quit smoking after I pointed out that considering the cost of a pack of cigarettes these days, he could afford to go away on vacation every year with the money he spends on cigarettes alone (he hadn't been able to afford a vacation and really wanted to go to Italy); for a year he quit but started back smoking, quit, smoked, but finally he did succeed in quitting and went to Italy for a few weeks and had a blast, hasn't gone back to smoking since he's saving his money to now go to other places. But you cannot force someone to quit unless you can remove all the cigarettes from the entire world (and then people would probably start smoking toilet paper); a person has to want to himself and then commit his own mind to quitting.

i barely remember how i did this but when i did try to get my uncle to stop i think i took a ciggarette and put it in hot water?(im not sure) and then it got big and everything came out;; thats when you say this is what is happeneing to your lungs;; its gonna be black and stuff.. err, the easier way you can print out a picture of lungs filled with smoke orr finally you can talk to him about lung cancer and all of the risks of smoking.. HOPE THAT HELPPeD! ? good luck

He's smoking around the baby? Your aunt needs to kick his *** outside. He needs to decide to quit smoking himself. You can't make him stop. You can nag the crap out of him, crush up his cigarettes, try blackmail, but really... It has to be his decision. If he wants to kill himself, that's one thing. But exposing a baby to second-hand smoke is unnecessary and preventable.

Smoking is, for many people, really- really - really hard to quit.
I managed to do it 2 years ago after numerous attempts.
BEST THING i ever did!!
One thing which helped (but wasn't the only reason for my success) was the book by Alan Carr - Easy Way to Stop Smoking.

At the end of the day you wont be able to nag him into quiting for his own sake - its a choice he has to make for himself.

HOWEVER!! - you and the rest of the family and friends and anyone else you can involve MUST MUST MUST MUST nag him to not smoke around his or anyone else's kids!!

Sounds like he is not really interested in quitting but perhaps you could get him to investigate a web search for "nicorette activestop".
