Does the staff at the ER get annoyed at patients who don't have serious prob!

Question: I had lots of anxiety/panic, asthma, and false alarms, and I've been to ER's countless of times. I noticed that they tend to get rather impatient, roll their eyes, or annoyed with me.

Should you ONLY go to the ER if you feel that you're having a medical emergency that's serious enough that it can't wait for you to make a doctor's appointment?

What if it's saturday night, and you can't wait till monday, and you have a horrible throat infection, will they prescribe you antibiotics?

Can ER's be substitutes for doctors when needed?

Or should you really only go there incase you have a serious and life threatening medical emergency?

What if you are having psychological issues?

I honestly don't want to come across like a freak, but according to how they glare at me in there at times, it's a bit disturbing.

I know how you feel! It seems I go there about once a month and it seems that the same people seem to be working and I swear they remember me because they get annoyed and roll their eyes. I think that if its late friday night and you are sick with the flu or whatever I think you should go so that you can get meds from the ER doctor and start to get better than wait for monday to call the doctor (and you might not even get in that same day)

I too have had many false alarms such as a severe pain in my side thinking it was my appendix and then horrible chest pains and I called a Nurse help line to see if they would advise me to go to the ER or not and whenever they say yes, I go to the er and the nurses (like the first one you see and then the reception people are bitches) So I make it a point to say "I didnt want to come in but the nurse help line said that I should" So that I dont look so stupid

As for mental/anxiety things, in my town (Duluth,MN) we have a place called Miller Dwan and you can go there when you are feeling suicidal, having anxiety attacks, ect and they will help you 24/7

Now if it isnt a life threatening emergency and its a weeknight (where you can make a doctor appt. the next day) I still think there are reasons to go (I had to go on a weeknight when I sprained my foot to see if it was broken) They always say only go if you HAVE to but no one can tell you if you should go or not unless it is you since no one can tell you what you are feeling I just wish people would be nicer if you happen to go more than normal people

haha welcome to my world

yeah i sometimes use the ER's as substitutes for my doctors.
it doesnt have to be life threatening

i usually call my whichever doctor that the problem relates to (ex. ankle doctor, knee doctor, PT, my regular doctor) and ask them what they think. if they arent open or they cant take me they will tell me what to do or what exact ER to go to

Yes, they are. However, they were all instructed to treat people well largely under the pressure of commercial, public relationship, financial survival, and even display of hypocrisy especially at the presence of good or bad insurance. As a result, the average people will hardly sense the existence of subtle discrimination. That's the facts of life today.
