What exactly does acidophilus do when you take it?!

Question: Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of several bacteria in the genus Lactobacillus. It is sometimes used commercially together with Streptococcus salivarius and Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus in the production of acidophilus-type yogurt. Also known as the Boas-Oppler bacillus after Ismar Isidor Boas, a German gastroenterologist (1858-1938) and Bruno Oppler (-1932) a German physician from Breslau.

Lactobacillus acidophilus gets its name from lacto- meaning milk, -bacillus meaning rod-like in shape, and acidophilus meaning acid-loving. This bacterium thrives in more acidic environments than most related microorganisms (pH 4-5 or lower) and grows best at 45 degrees Celsius. L. acidophilus occurs naturally in the human and animal gastrointestinal tract, mouth, and vagina.[1] L. acidophilus ferments lactose into lactic acid, like many (but not all) lactic acid bacteria. Certain related species (known as heterofermentive) also produce ethanol, carbon dioxide, and acetic acid this way. L. acidophilus itself (a homofermentative microorganism) produces only lactic acid. Like many bacteria, L. acidophilus can be killed by excess heat, moisture, or direct sunlight.

it helps the PH balance in your intestinal tract

Acidophilus is friendly bacteria in the insestines and helps with the elimanation process. If you take antibiotics they kill the friendly bacteria and then the intestine does not work properly and as a result you have food rotting in the intestines instead of being broken down as normal. It is always a good thing to eat yogurt after a round of antibotics to replace the friendly flora!Hope this helps oh also the capsuls are just a different supply of the acidophlis .

Acidophilus is used for so many different types of ailments such as bacterial vaginosis, allergy treatment, diarrhea prevention, irritable bowel syndrome and high cholesterol.
It promotes healthy flora in your intestines and replaces the "friendly" intestinal bacteria destroyed by antibiotics
aiding digestion and suppressing disease-causing bacteria.

Probiotics are live microbial organisms that are naturally present in the digestive tract and vagina.

Some of the ways they are thought to promote health include suppressing the growth of potentially harmful bacteria, improving immune function, enhancing the protective barrier of the digestive tract, and helping to produce vitamin K.

One of those, L. acidophilus ferments lactose into lactic acid, aiding our digestion and promoting "healthy" bacterial growth in our GI. It aids in relieving diarrhea caused by antibiotics, prevents yeasts infections, aids in brochitis and sinusitis, and helps the immune system.
