Does taking allergy medication make me ineligible to donate blood?!

Question: I plan on donating Wednesday; it is presently Monday night. Can I take a Claritin tablet and still donate?

Yes you should still be able to donate.

They will ask you questions when you donate. Ie. have you taken any meds within 'x' amount of time? Just tell them YES, and what you took.

I donated before, and I had taken antibiotics just a few days prior. It did not disqualify me. I asked if it would, and why they asked, and the nurse told me that: they just needed to make a notation of it in the chart for precautionary reasons.

That was also years ago (about 10 maybe), so it may have changed since then .. but I doubt it.

Whether you get paid for donating or not .. either way .. thanks so much for doing it :) It really does make a difference in people's lives :)

Cheers to you!!

I believe so, but I would contact them to make sure.

they extract all sorts of chemicals out of the blood especially medicines. when you go they will ask you a series of questions to make sure you can donate. if they dont ask about allergy medicines ask them about it.

It should not effect your blood donation. They won't take blood if your are anemic (hemoglobin to low) or if you have admit to using IV drugs. All blood taken in donation is tested for HIV and Hepatitis. If our blood tests positive they will notify and discard your donated blood.

I don't think you can because allergy medication may be dangerous for donee who has high blood pressure or glaucoma.

I would call & ask how long it has to be out of your system.

That's nice of you to do that.:-)
