In the words of my 5 year old, if its not a button, why is it called a belly but!
Question: You don't think of the belly "button" as a button because you are used to seeing "innie" belly buttons versus "outie". "Innie" belly buttons are more like a small hole, while "outie" belly buttons are what actually look like a button. They are less common, it all depends on how the doctor cuts off the umbilical cord. Also, "innie" belly buttons are considered more attractive, so most doctors give you an "innie".

goood questionnn
You don't think it kinda sorta looks like a button?
Well it is a sort of closure.
"Outie" navels do look sort of button-like, so that's probably how the name originated. But "innies" -- which I'm guessing your five-year-old has -- really don't. It all depends on how your umbilical cord was cut and healed.
