Having tonsils removed?!

Question: I am 23 and am having my tonsils removed on 26th March due to severe cases of tonsilitus. I'm quite worried though as a lot of people have told me that it hurts like hell. I've also been told by the Dr that I will be kept in Hospital for about 1 week due to the risk of bleeding (I live in Germany so am having the op done here which makes it more worrying - different hospital and language problems).

Can some one tell me honestly, just how painful is it going to be after the op?

I am in UK age 29 had mine out last year, its not as painful as having tonsilitis is i promise!
In fact i dont understand why you are in for a week i was in for one night!
Yes you will be sore but if you have been hurting enough to have them out its worth it i have been so much better sice having it done no regrets.
Try not to worry its really worth it if you have been suffering x

you have to expect pain - you're having part of your throat cut off! but also, you'll be doped up on painkillers so it will be managable. dont get yourself worked up into a panic. compared to child birth this will be a breeze!

put it this way if you went through tonsillitis you should be fine with this.

Check the language thing thoroughly, in case they remove
your toenails. ha ha ha.
Vee haf vays ov making you squwak. he he he.

I dont know, but I live in Japan and Im having mine out on March 25th! Ill be in the hospital for a week, too. And another week at home resting.
From what I understand, the older you are the more painful. Im 30, but Im not worried -- its a small price to pay to not have tonsil problems anymore!
PS: Managed care in the United States is why they send people home so quickly these days. They dont want to spend the money. In other countries, they are just more cautious and conservative in health care. It certainly does not mean that health care in the U.S. is better, so dont worry!

I had mine removed when I was 21. Mine was an outpatient surgery. As soon as I woke up, I was being loaded into my car. I think it's kind of crazy they want you to stay there for an entire week. I know the doctor that did my surgery used a different type of tequnique for the surgery. There was no cutting, I guess. They cauterized (sp!) it so there would be minimal bleeding. So perhaps that's the difference.

The first couple of days I felt great. I had no idea why people complained about it, then it all hit me. The liquid pain medication wasn't doing a thing for me. I ended up going back to the doc for some higher dosage. Just make sure you keep on your pain medication. Wake up during the night to take it or else you're going to regret it. It's pretty painful, but it's nothing unbearable or anything.

Good luck! I hope that it all goes well for you! :)

it hurts but the quantity of ice cream you get is unreal! for the first couple of days its like swallowing glass but it eases with time my main mistake was salt and vinegar crisps avoid them and you will be sound!!!

i had mine out before the 9th grade and it didnt hurt at all as soon as i woke up from anesthesia i wanted a drink.. my throat felt very dry but they put me in the recovery room for about a half our but i wouldnt go back to sleep anyway cause of how bad i wanted a drink so they took me to my room and gave me apple juice! that was a mistake it burnt so bad make sure u just drink water at first..i onky stayed in the hospital for one nite and i was fine.. no bleeding and then the next day i was eating a bagel and chips even tho thats not what the recommend.. dont worry to much about it u should be fine!

My daughter at age 16 had to have them removed because she was sick so much of the time with sore throats, strep, etc. She did not have to stay in the hospital, but we had to watch for bleeding. She was very sick for about three days after the surgery. But they gave her pain meds and "mom" was there to hold her hand. They said they had never seen such large tonsils before and there was a lot of scar tissue because of the constant infections. But she snapped back and we don't regret having it done. No more strep or sore throats. She didn't have a fever and we did follow the doctors instructions to the letter. I am surprised they would want to keep you in the hospital, but I would think overnight would be enough. I think you should consult a different surgeon.

Yes its painful, but the sooner you can start swallowing solids the better! The biggest risk of bleeding is in the first 24-48 hours.
I had mine out when I was in my 30's, I was kept in hospital for just 2 days after the op but with instructions not to work for at least 2 weeks and to take it easy during that time.

i havent had it b4 but my friend has n he sed it hurts but it goes away. the best thing is u can have jelly n ice cream all time! lol dont worry, u will be fine, germany have a medical service jus as good as ours in the uk

I am 43 and I had mine took out last December due to constant strep. The first couple of days were ok, but then my ears started hurting. I called the doctor and he told me it wasn't my ears . I was refered pain due to all the crevices in your throat. I still can't taste alot of things because I was on 7 different antibiotics and 3 rounds of steriods during the time I had strep. The anibiotics killed the good antibodies in my system as well as the bad and I ended up with thrush mouth right after surgery. But in your case I'm sure you will be fine. Good Luck!

im not going to lie to you man, but it really does hurt like hell! i had it done, jesus christ, that was a mistake, even with the pain killers ect... you sit in a bed for a week or more having to put up with a really sore throat and constant bleed streams coming up through your mouth
