What are the consequences of abusing Xanax?!

Question: I was literally shocked when my [bipolar] friend said casually on the phone last night, "Sure, I've abused Xanax here and there"- I knew she did pot, but not Xanax. She's going through a hard phase in her life. Also, I hear a lot of people are abusing Oxycotin [something like that], and what are the effects of that? People are so stupid these days. Damn.

Both xanax and oxycontin are extremely strong addictions
oxycontin is really easy to overdose on
and oxycontin is an unreal expensive addiction
the consequences of getting addicted to either is losing your life, or a large part of it

"isn't it true that kids who have drug-addicted parents are more easily addicted?" - Im not sure about that, but kids who have drug addicted parents are more likely to abuse drugs themselves, not sure if they get addicted easier.

My close friends 16 year old son just passed away this January of an overdose of Xanax and Methadone. His life is over and his family is devasted. His parents are the ones who found him dead in his bedroom. Your friend sounds as if they may be reaching out for help by confiding in you what they are doing.
