"Spit" is Saliva Projected Immensely by Tongue.

when it's spit, it's what's in your mouth. when it's drool it's usually running out of your mouth.

Drool - what leaks out of your mouth through no fault of your own due to being unconcious.
Spit - what was forced out of your mouth by your own choice.
The word "drool" implies a lack of control.
