Why should you breathe through your nose not your mouth?!

Question: The lungs are a primary source of our energy level. They extract oxygen from the air we breathe primarily on the exhale. Because the nostrils are smaller then the mouth, air exhaled through the nose creates back pressure when one exhales. It slows the air escape so the lungs have more time to extract oxygen from them. When there is proper oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange, the blood will maintain a balanced pH. If carbon dioxide is lost too quickly, as in mouth breathing, oxygen absorption is decreased. The nostrils and sinuses filter and warm the air going into the lungs. The mouth breather bypasses this. The sinuses produce nitric oxide (NO) which is a pollutant but harmful to bacteria in small doses. Mouth breathing also accelerates water loss increasing possible dehydration.
Each nostril is innervated by five cranial nerves from a different side of the brain. Each nostril functions independently and synergistically in filtering, warming, moisturizing, dehumidifying, and smelling the air.

When you breathe properly, you provide the body with oxygen, which feeds all the vital organs and muscles of the body

Because the air that you breath back out through your nose is actually filtered air and is better for the environment. It sounds weird, but it's true, your nose filters the air as it travel back out.

This was asked recently:

Cause you nose has hairs in it that works like a filtration system. When you breath through your mouth it goes straight into your lungs.

During cold weather it is better to breathe through your nose because that allows air to warm before hitting your lungs. Breathing through your nose in general keeps your throat moist and your nose also filters bacteria from hitting your lungs.

NicoleS i think your wrong...

When you breathe in there is dust in the air. Your nose filters it protecting your lungs. It does this with the little hairs in it.

=)

When breathing through your nose the air gets warmer because of the longer passageway and the warm air gets into your system easier because it is closer to your body temperature inside your lungs.

nose have filtering ability

You nose hairs and mucus filter the air that you breath. Also, the air is warmed and moistened by that route. Mouth breathers, first of all, are annoying. Secondly, its more like gulping air. So, instead of air going into your lungs it goes into your stomach.

I'm not sure but once my dentist asked me if I breathe in through my nose or mouth so maybe it's bad for your teeth if you breathe in through your mouth a lot?
