MOMS HELP!!! my son is sick..?!

Question: My son had a fever for four days and coughing for the past week. I took him to the dr and he said the virus just has to run its course. okay well now all this flem is making my 7 year old cough and because he is so young he cant "hack" it up. so he cant control his coughing and he is throwing up everything he eats or drinks so I am just giving him little bits of gatorade and water at a time. First I didnt want him to throw up but now I think it is a good idea to get that "crap" out of his system. The flem.

Am I right or do you have any other suggestions?

Like maybe a expectorant for kids??

Thanks a bunch!

really!

I have a boy boy who has repeated lung and upper respiratory problems. He is also 7, so in a way, I understand your concern.

After having many (many) nights ( including tonight) of waking to the sound of my little one gasping for air or coughing like crazy I have learned a few things.

* You know what's best, if you are worried go to a differant doctor. I have now got it down to a fine art. I can tell when my boy's cough is getting nasty and I go to the doctors who always say "it's a virus and will pass". 2 days later my boy has Bronchitus, pneomia, an asthma or croup attack. If the doctors would practise more preventative medical proceedures - it would certianly help. They don't, they leave that part up to us parents. So if you have tried everything you can think of - then it's the doctors turn to take over. ... so if in doubt .. go to the doctors .

* With respitory problems or infections it's important that the child stays calm, as extra anxiety to the child can physically worsen the condition. So it's important that at least in front of your boy that you you remain clam.

* What I do now, to prevent a cough getting worse is try to control the phlegm in the nose. That is where it all starts. Get a strong nose spray and I find Sudafed (children's) drys up the nasal passages too. It's the phlegm that causes the coughing as it irritates the respiratory system.

* It's quite important to know what the fever is doing too. For example, if the fever is staying, then it suggests that the virus is turning bacterial. If it just spikes and and then goes, then it most likely is viral. There is not much one can do for a viral infection but nose spray, and Sudafed, plus a inhalator really help. Bacterial is .. antibiotics.

* Also, what they do in this part of Europe ( and I thought it TOTALLY weird when I moved here - but it actually works) is that they cut an onion and place it on a plate in the room. It really helps dry things up !!!

* Cooler fresh air is an amazing help for upper respiratory infections. Wrapping him up warm but opening a window in his room for a few min . to get some cooler air in. I bundle my boy up in a comforter and carry him outside straight away as I hear the beginnings of coughing/ gasping and it usually calms down with in mins.

You son is most likely vomiting because of the Phlegm quantities, the dealing with that may help over all.

Anyway, hope this all helps, and that tomorrow morning your wee lad is bouncing all over the place being some sort of super hero again .

try some chicken noodle soup, that should break up the flem fairly well so he can get rid of it

Check and see if they have a Mucinex for children of his age. it is a expectorant and it is wonderful . At least it will help break it up where it will not take so long to get it all up.
Plus do not give him Milky foods or drinks. That makes it thicker and harder to get up. Try to give him things like warm chicken broth and things like that so that it makes it help to break it lose and make it easier to get up. And maybe it will help him get it up without throwing up.
Good Luck Southern Momma

chicken noodle soup and dont give dem hard food only soft food

Try buying THYME Cream and rub under his feet, chest and underarms for the cough, this works like magic! You can find it in a SPROUTS store. Give him homeade fresh dark purple grapes and apple mixed together and blend to make juice, instead of Gatorade. For the flem try boiling a 4 cups of water and add a chunk of fresh Ginger about an inch and let it boil 4 more minutes. Cover up and let it stand for 5 minutes. Pour in a cup, add honey and a squeeze some lemmon juice. NO need for medicine, this is the way I cure my 3 year son. Fever should go away too after his body feels all the health stuff in his system! So much medicine makes fevers go higher each time, try the natural way! Best Of LUCK!!!
