What is your opinion on this?!

Question: I never take medications as I rely on my body's ability to take care of itself.About two weeks ago I caught a very bad case of something that almost choked me to death with sinus drainage.I took some mucus relief tablets for about three days according to the directions on the package.I slipped into a depressed state I never experienced before.Is it possible that this medication did this?Because I stopped taking it right away as I realized my thinking was not normal and I have not felt that way since then.

My father is a doctor and his best advice is to take as little medication as possible. He said flu shots are great and should be taken along with other vaccines, but general medications along with antibiotics should be taken as little as possible. Do you know that we are running out of antibiotics and are facing a dooms day where nothing will work on us, because of over use.

And to answer your question it's very possible. They throw things on the shelfs for a quick dollar. Over the counter medication isn't that well seen to by the FDA as prescription medications are.

My father also has told me there's nothing worse than doctors giving one medication then giving more to counter the side affects of the one. He said your better off without nothing in many cases and let it run its course, after which you become imune to whatever it was you had.

If your body was weakened from the struggle it would be possible to slip into depression. Time should solve it. It would be difficult to guess of the mucus relief tablets contributed.

Although the evidence appears compelling, it is meaningless scientifically. That requires substantial research.

A quick check of the package insert for a well known mucus relief medication mentions nothing about causing depression. However, those meds are NOT to be taken by people taking antidepressants. But, it doesn't sound like you were taking antidepressants.

Perhaps you were just depressed to be so ill that you violated your own preference to avoid medication.

However, side effects often are not known until a product hits the market and reports like yours begin to filter in and eventually enough evidence accrues that further study is required. You might contact the FDA with your experience and inquire if there is a formal reporting process. that way, if there is a database forming, you'd be adding important information to protect the public health.

Antihistamines can cause depression. Maybe there are common ingredients.

Hope you are happy & well by now! (-;
