Why do people say `bless you' when you sneeze?!

Question: does anyone know where that originated from? what do you think?

Answers: does anyone know where that originated from? what do you think?

because when you sneeze, it is your spirit trying to escape...when people say bless you, it crams it back in!!=]

because everytime you sneeze, your heart skips a beat

Because legend has it that god could cure anyone who is sick and when you have a cold or the flue you sneeze, so they say that so "God" will help you get healthier.

Because when you sneeze your heart actually stops breifly. so they say God Bless you.

they use to think u loose ur soul if u sneeze.

Because you are falling sick.

Its from the times of the plague, if you sneezed people thought you may die from the plague so they would say 'god bless you'.

Ive heard a couple reasons.
1)A little bit of your soul escapes when you sneeze and you want it to be in heaven.

2) The heart stops thing

and 3) When people would sneeze way back when they would most likely die from whatever sickness they had.

Karebear is correct. Back in the old days people actually thought your soul would leave your body when you sneezed! By saying "God Bless You" it protected your body from any demons or evil spirits that might take over while your soul was away for the moment. Pretty strange, huh?

A legend holds that it was believed that the heart stops when you sneeze, and the phrase "bless you" is meant to ensure the return of life or to encourage your heart to continue beating. I know that the heart skips a beat. If one sneezes many times in a row, chest pain can result.

Because "die, scum" would be rude.

During the dark ages, before the concept of germs and viruses, People believed that illnesses were caused by evil spirits and demons. When a person sneezed, you were to be blessed to excise you of the spirits that were making you ill.

The tradition stuck.

German "Gesunheit" to your health so your are blessing the with good health I guess?

All of the above, plus I think it's just polite to do so.
