I tried to get in to see a doctor for a bad sunburn, got refured to the ER! What!

Question: They are in from 7 am to 7 pm 7 days a week so a doctor is avalible pretty often; but they don't like to see patients.

I injured my groin muscle in a bicycle accident and they told me to go to the ER because they don't look at that injury. I also got a blistering sunburn and called (on a Saturday morning) to see if they could see me (I was thinking a cortisone shot or a lortab perscription might help.) Again I was told to go to the ER. I asked how on earth a sunburn was an emergency? They said my electrolyte levels should be checked.

Am I missing something? Aren't those places around so we can see a doc in a non emergency situation when our family md is not avalible? Like for poision ivy, insect bite, bicycle wreck, sunburn, etc?

I know, right? Then the ER is mad at you for coming in for a sunburn when someone else is coming in for a gunshot.

Normally non-emergency centers that have later hours can help you with problems such as the ones you talked about. However, depending on where you live, you may or may not have access to them. (i.e. rural or urban) Sounds like your doctor is tired of working. I would find a different practioner to trust my health with.

I know! This seems to be happening at a lot of doctors' offices these days. It's SO annoying! I blame the office staff. They like to keep their schedule in a neat, pre-planned package so that they can get off work on time at the end of the day. They act like patients who call and need to see the doctor are a pain in their neck! It's about impossible to get in and be seen! But that's what doctors are for! I don't think most doctors realize this is going on. It's ridiculous. You have to be really firm!

Walk in Clinics like what you are describing are not for these types of things. They are more for things like physicals, routine shots, etc. These places do not typically have Xray or MRI Machines or the Dr's to read the results correctly. They also do not do bloodwork that need immediate turn around like the electrolyte levels.

Many of these places are around b/c most people do not health insurance and can't afford a regular dr visit.

They did the right thing with the Sunburn - I have seen a "simple" sunburn turn into something alot worse.
