Mirtazapine - advice please?!

Question: I've just been prescribed Mirtazapine 15mg by my doctor.

She advised me to take them at night as they will make me drowsy. How many mins or hours should I take them before I go to bed?

Thanks in advance

Hi. I've been on Mirtazapine for about three years now and found that when you first start taking it, you need to allow about 20 mins, and no more, as an advisable time to allow before it kicks in. After this time you will feel "different", and will probably want to melt into your pillow if you're already in your bed! It's a nice feeling, but @ 15mg, as you probably already know, Mirtazapine in particular has a VERY strong sedative effect, so be prepared next day to feel a bit "spacey". Don't let that put you off though. In my experience, Mirtazapine really IS a wonder drug. It helped me out of a deep depression a lot quicker than any other medication I have tried in the past. If you're appetite has disappeared, be prepared to start enjoying food all over again, as this drug will make you want to eat all day long - seriously! 30mg is a better dose really in the long run, as, believe it or not, you experience less drowsiness on a higher dose! Strange but true. It's because at 15mg, Mirtazapine is primarily anti-histaminergic, hence the appetite increase and drowsiness. Of course, i'm only offering advice that's based purely on my own experience of the drug. Like any medication, this drug may or may not be to everyone's liking, but I hope in your case, you experience at least some benefit from it. Good luck to you, and I guarantee you'll be feeling a lot better soon. ;-)
