I was addicted to painkillers for over a year. I had to have some major stuff happen in my life for me to realize I was addicted/dependant.

I had rationalized to myself that the "addiction" was a "side-effect" of the medication that I needed to take because of post-surgery pain.

I realized that I wasn't happy with who I was when I was taking them and my life was very depressing.

I had to come to the realization on my own and "detox" myself. I started taking a smaller dosage on the same schedule and it took me about a month and a half to stop.. when I was finally taking a small enough amount, I just stopped one day and dealt with some withdrawal symptoms for a week or so, instead of stopping cold turkey.

You can't just say "stop"... because he's been able to rationalize and justify for this long, reinforcing the habits... you need something traumatic or life-changing to happen to "scare" him into addressing his problem... because the fact is, is that he doesn't see it as a problem right now.

Well my mom does have a problem and she knows it and when she tries to come off of them it makes her feel like she is going to die.And now we really don't know whaty to do.

Phone your/his doctor, tell them exactly whats going on and if your dad is staying at home ask if the doctor could visit

you can not help him until he is ready to help himself. All you can do is be there. He's still in denial. Good luck.
