Can a person drink salt water if they are stranded in the ocean?!
Question: i'm watching a show and these people are stranded in the middle of the ocean on a dingy with no water. can't they drink the salt water?

Yeah they're gonna go crazy... who knows what's in that water? Also there's the whole thing about the massive amount of salt that the body probably can't handle by downing it like that for the first time in their lives. It could be lethal due to hydration.
the salt will dehydrate them, before the water will hydrate them.

You'll dehydrate faster. You can actually drink your urin for a short period of time. Of course a gin and tonic is much better.
No you cannot do it unless you eased yourself into it. One person crossed the atlantic ocean in a small boat and drank only salt water. BUT in the months prior to this trip this person was taking in salt water every day to get their body used to it. If you just tried to drink it without this easement you would just throw it up... hence dehydration.
to drink salt water you would have to seperate the water with the salt by boiling it.
