Valium for anxiety?!

Question: My doctor recently prescribed me 2 mg valium to be taken once every 12 hours as needed for panic. I have taken as prescribed for an attack, however I still feel anxious. My doctor told me that we will be able to adjust my dosage as needed, and i believe that it needs to be higher.

When is the appropriate time to discuss this with my doctor? I just got the prescription a few days ago so I don't want to rush into upping my mgs, but at the same time I already feel the dosage is incorrect.

Anyone with experience care to put in your 2 cents? Thanks in advance!!

alright. i have suffered from panic disorder and a bunch of other anxiety related mental afflictions. i would be VERY careful with a benzo like valium - they are SUPER addictive. i have found a better route to managing my anxiety is the buddhist process of detaching yourself from your mind and just observing your thoughts instead of getting caught up with them. if you do that, they have power over you. if you let them go, they won't.

i also try to work on observing my breathing, and breathing through my stomatch instead of my lungs when i am anxious. this has helped me a lot - and i only take benzos once or twice a month, when i feel like abusing a pharmie. :)

im in the same situation and my dr upped my meds real high real fast and sent me into a manic state......take it slowwwwwww. give it about a week and if u still feel the same then call your dr up.

Yes, your doctor is not too smart. Valium is only a very short-term solution. Drugs are not the answer. You need to speak to somebody about dealing with whatever is causing your anxiety so you learn to recognize early signs and deal with it.

I'm not sure if they're supposed to prescribe Valium for Anxiety, it's a sleeping medication. I thought it was more for people who have trouble sleeping, but it can also have the opposite affect if you have not been relaxing while taking it.

I am NOT A DOCTOR, However my Doctor gave me diazepam (valium) for anxiety disorder. I take a 5mg in the morning and a 5mg in the evening. Seems to work well.

How old are you>? what is your body structure>? weight, eating habits, etc. all come into play.

Talk to your doctor. Tell him about your concerns.

Good luck.

I think that you should wait a few days to see if it will get in your system. If it still doesn't work get a higher dose. Besides that no one knows your boby better then you do. and panic attacks are not fun at all so I would if you truly feel that way ask the docotor for a higher dose.

I think you are heading in the wrong direction. Your doctor sounds like he just fell off the tuna truck! All you will do is get addicted on Valium. Your body is trying to tell you something and if you try to ignore it it will get worse.
I went to therapy and they prescribed me an anti depressant. The problem is the attacks got worse. They were so bad I would collapse on the floor hyperventilating. I couldn't go out and quit my job. I stayed home for a year.
The fear I had turned to anger and I finally decided to do something about it. I got books on the subject and there was one in particular that helped me. The book is called "Don't Panic". It not only had information on the disorder but techniques to stop them. Breath work, meditation, and stuff like that. At first i thought I couldn't do this when I feel like I am dying but I started to try. I got control. I dealt with it and stopped it. Once in a great while I feel one coming on,but I do the correct breathing and get control of it.
I strongly suggest you do the same, the pills won't help. They will at best be a stall! Good luck.

Valium is definately not the right medication. For anxiety you should probably be taking something like Paxil or prozac. Valium is just gonna make you feel sleepy and drugged up. That's not what you're looking for. I myself suffer from bad anxiety and often have panic attacks. I would talk to your doc and see about switching meds alltogether.

Vallium is HIGHLY addictive, please dont take them on a regular basis, YOU WILL get hooked, its then a nightmare trying to get off them.
You need to see your doctor about other methods of controlling your anxiety, and where it has its roots.
You would be better taking relaxation courses to control your panic attacks, By doing this you will be able to control your breathing etc, and see the attacks for what they are, just an over-reaction to a simple situation. Dont think that by increasing your dosage will help long term, it wont, you will feel ok for a short time, but you will need to increase the dose to maintain the same level of normality, its a vicious circle. Please take care. Good luck

ok...you really need to stop and think. you want to take more poisons to control an illness that you are bringing on yourself? rather than upping the dose right away, make some lifestyle changes. relax. i know its easier said than done, but remember what you dont get done today or what goes wrong today can be finished and correct tomorrow. do some excersice, yoga, etc. and hopefully u will feel better. give the medicine some time to do its work. remember the aim is to stop taking the valium completely. so focus on getting rid of the factors leading to anxiety rather than on the treatment. the doctor's prescription is fine...any more will just do you more harm and make you more dependent on it.
