What happens if you take cough drops for nothing?!

Nothing overly bad will happen to you however, avoid taking them in excess as they have a laxative effect.
I wouldn't encourage you to take them with out a sore throat but, it should be OK.

to me it's a waste of resource which may be put to better use if given to those who have need of it e.g. through charity etc.
