How do I get rid of this cough?!

Question: I had the (upper respiratory) flu four weeks ago. It lasted a week. After that, I developed a cough.

This is my third week of coughing. I've gone completely through the cough medicine my doctor prescribed me. I have two capsules of Mucinex left. My coughing has not improved.

Sometimes, my cough is productive, but most of the time, it isn't. I can definitely still feel some mucus in my lungs, and currently, I can't breathe in without feeling some mucus in my air passages.

I'd prefer not to go back to the doctor. I've already spent $300 on doctor bills this year, and I have my wedding to pay for in less than five months.

What can I do to get rid of the cough? It makes it difficult for me to work (I teach for a living, and I can't lecture for very long without having coughing fits.)

I know I have to sort of ride this out, but is there anything at all I can do to speed up my recovery?

Your upper bronchial tubes may be aggravated, esp. if you're not producing anything.

If a pharmacist can recommend some over-the-counter meds to sooth the upper bronchial tubes, then that may also be worth a shot.

Also, if your air in your house is very dry, that could also aggravate them. Try cold water vaporizer for over night....

drink lots and lots of fluids!

Drink Lemonade juice. The sourness removes the cough before it gets worse.

i heard eating FRESH pineapple helps....

Drink as many hot liquids as possible, especially hot tea with honey and lemon in it. Also, soak in a hot tub. If he's available when you're coughing, have you fiance pat your back because that might get some more of it loose. I know it helped once when I had pneumonia.
