Is diarrhea really a good excuse for being off from work?!

Question: I used to work with a woman who would often call in sick and claim that she had diarrhea. In fact, she did this so many times it became a joke. I've also seen a couple of people here on Y!A claim that they have played hookie by calling in and telling their bosses they have diarrhea. I'm really wondering if this is a good excuse, though. I can't help but think that when I have diarrhea, I usually go to the bathroom and do my business and everything's OK afterwards. Not only that, but Pepto-Bismol exists for a reason!

Yes, depending on the circumstances. When I am sick and have diarrhea, I will pretty much live in the bathroom for hours. At times even the water I drank would come out that way. When I am that sick, even Imodium or the prescription diarrhea medicine I have don't work.

Also, there are people that suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn's Disease and other illnesses cause severe bouts of diarrhea and many times they have difficulty getting to the bathroom at times. Its not a constant thing and generally flares up occasionally. How great would that be to happen at work? I should point out that having these diseases does not prevent them from working according to the Disability requirements, so not working isn't the answer either.

It depends on the person, and it can be used as an excuse to play hookie, just as faking a stuffed nose or cough, or lying about having the flu. If people are going to call in sick, they will make up whatever think will work.

These are my opinions and are based on my experiences and the experiences of other people I know.

Bottom line: Yes, it is an valid excuse for missing work.

yes it is

I wouldn't want to waste a sick day for that.

But to answer your question it is used as an excuse because one you really can't check if it is true or not.
Most people have had diarrhea one time so they feel sympathy for it.
But yeah I agree take some meds and see if it improves.

I think its a lousy excuse.Take some immodium Ad and 'poof' its gone!

Its a good excuse if you really have it! Pepto and immodium dont always work. And honestly how much work can you be doing if you are running for the toilet ever so often?

Vomiting, diarrhea, runny noses or couching up phlegm is the natural way for elimination of something bad form the body. When a person gets diarrhea I would not suggest them to take anything to stop it since it is your bodies natural way of saying that there is something wrong that needs to be eliminated. People get diarrhea for many reasons. I am sure you don't have to full history like this persons doctor does. If someone called in due to vomiting it would be acceptable. I personally do not see vomiting any different than someone calling in for diarrhea.

I agree with meowzie *sm*
