Where Would Vampires Bite Their Victims...?!

Question: ...If the intent was just to get blood, not to kill? I know little about human anatomy, but it'd seem that a bite on the neck-jugular would be fatal. What about the wrists? Or are there other areas of the body that would work?

I've been wondering this myself since I like vampire movies a lot haha (Interview with the vampire is one of my favorite movies).

Yugular vein would be fine if they don't mind biting a vertical lined bite slightly below the ears. Pretty nice irrigation without endangering the life of the person, it's a vein so the blood won't be that oxygenated.

External carotid artery would be a good spot due to it's superficiality (it's the typical place in the middle of the neck to the sides where vampires bite in movies and cartoons and such). Though they would have to drink little blood fast, the external carotid does irritgate a lot of neck structures (though I believe it's the internal carotid artery which turns into the anterior meningeal artery and we all know screwing that artery would be a big no no because it irrigates half of the brain). As long as they don't bite too much and pop the internal carotid, I think a vampire could drink some decent blood without killing the person.

Each person has a different amount of blood depending on their weight. An average middle heighted guy that weighs some 140 pounds would have 4.5 litres of blood. You could easily suck 2 cups of blood without too much problems. A short lady like mysef on the other hand carries a pathetic 2 litres of blood. A vampire would just be able to suck half a cup of blood if they intentionally wouldn't want to harm me big time.

Now, as for the arm. Hrm... The issue with the arm is that where arteries are, nerves are. One false bite and you cut a nerve, leaving the hand of the poor sap pretty much screwed. The radial artery wouldn't have been a bad idea if it weren't because the nerve passed right next to it. Biting the braquial vein in the place where you donate blood would be the safest bet because only the muscuocutaneous nerve passes in front and a well aimed bite would get blood without damaging nerves (plus the musculocutaneous nerve is superficial and is more skin sensitivity than arm movements, can't go too wrong there).

I guess there aren't too many decent places to bite people without damaging nerves because the big arteries that are away from nerves are inside your body and you'd be an idiot to purposely bite an Aorta unless you wanted to kill the person.

I think this is an interesting question indeed.

The holes are not large enough to cause exsanguination and it is a good place to get it

Well everywhere on the body is richly supplied with blood. It depends how hungry they were and whether they wanted oxygenated or deoxygenated blood.

Hungry vampire seeking oxygenated blood without killing the victim is going to have a hard time, arteries run close to veins. The best bet would be going for the ankle arteries, or the popliteal artery behind the knee would be good actually, but maybe too deep for vampire teeth.

Veins wise, veins on the wrist or back of the hand would do good. You would very likely die to a bite in the carotid artery or jugular vein in the neck for sure.

Is it more worrying that you asked this or that i took the time to really think about it!!?
