Bulimia question about binging and purging?!

Question: I was with my friend last night when she had one of her binging episodes. She ate so much food I don't know where she put all of it!!! I tried to get her to stop but she just kept on eating. She used to do this every other day but now only binges/purges once a week. Last night I watched her eat a whole large Tony's pizza, candy, chips, diet coke, pudding, even dry oatmeal!!! She would eat as much as she could then puke it back up and then start all over again.

My question is: do bulimics usually eat that much food at one time? She said it was one of her worst ones ever.

If you are bulimic, can you tell me what one of your episodes was like and how much food you ate?

I'm very worried for my friend. Her stomach has got to be messed up from all that food and throwing up.

That's a very large binging episode.
Usually, people will try to hide their binges...so she's unusual in that way...maybe she's asking for help.

Tell her she needs help NOW.

Purging causes the glands in your throat to swell & bulge out...looking ugly; your teeth turn yellow then brown from all the stomach acid being brought up to her mouth by purging; she will get GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)...eventually she will need to use prescription medication for her GERD which does damage to your bones.

The esophagus is a very fragile part of the body...all the gastric acids can cause Barrett's Esophagus which is precancerous to esophageal cancer!

She can also ruin her colon/bowel functioning.

Tell her parents. Suggest she seek therapy from a professional social worker or psychologist to help her deal with her self image & eating behavior; learning coping skills & deal with underlying issues that caused the bulimia.

She also needs a medical check-up from MD.

Also antidepressants can help minimize bulimic behavior...needs a psychiatrist.

You're a good friend

you rly need to tell someone about her problems. Even if she doesn't want help she sounds like she rly needs it. GET HER HELP NOW!!!! BE A GOOD FRIEND!!! : )

i had a friend go through that. and all the advice i got was saying to tell a trusted adult. but if i did that, i felt like i was betraying my friend and our trust. then i found a website that told the dangers of bulimia. health effects and that kind of thing. it was terrifying. i had tried to get her to stop before. but she wouldnt. it was one of the hardest things that i have ever had to do, but i talked to my school guidance counselor and didnt use her name at first, and then i said who it was and then parents had to get involved and she got some professional help. yes, i felt some extreme guilt at first (though i knew i had done the right thing) and she was pretty upset with me for telling. but she got over the anger once she realized that i was right and only trying to help. and i got over the guilt as i saw her improve. you need to tell somebody. you could truly save her life. because this case sounds very severe if she doesnt get help soon, she will not make it.
