Usually steel rods in bones are too deep in the tissue to trigger metal detectors. People who have steel plates in the skull are given medical clearance cards to show at security points because the skull is close to the surface and often will set off the alarms.
ETA: Piercings are too small, I think, to set off the detectors.
I don't know, but I have 12 piercings and they have never set off airport metal detectors no matter what kind of jewelry I have in them.
I have been told that the reason those rods and pins don't set off airport metal detectors is that the machines are calibrated to not go off for them. It has something to do with the density of the steel and it being at such a depth in the body. I have known a few people with fresh metal in their bodies that have set the detectors off but they just tell the security person that they have a pin (or whatever) and show them the area... some people have been given certificates from doctors saying that they have them just in case they do set the detectors off (usually in the case of newer ones where the tissue hasn't built up around it).
