A self certificate is valid for the first 7 days, after that you normally receive a med 3 from you doctor, assuming he sees you and feels it appropriate for you to be off work. In this case, since he has not seen you over the past 3 weeks, he can only issue a med 5, which can be backdated. Having been no information about your current illness, nor your past history, it is not possible to say whether your GP will be prepared to do this. Certainly a 3 week absence would require your GP to have evidence that you had a significant condition.

you should be able to get one

You should have sent a self certification sick note in to cover yourself for the 1st 7 days. After that you should have got one off your doctor. You are lucky your employers have only suspended you, they could have sacked you. Get to your doctor as soon as possible to get the sick note you require.

i don't know, were you really sick

You can self-certify for the first seven days. Your employer will have the necessary form. Your GP may backdate a sicknote for the last 2 weeks, but why on earth have you waited so long to see a doctor anyway? If you don't provide a sicknote it could result in disciplinary action at worst, and not being paid at best.

You should get one. But... what were you thinking?

get a self certificate and fill it in with the dates of the first week you were off work and get it to your employer as soon as possible, then, when you see your doctor get him to give you a sick note to cover the rest of the time you were off work but get him to fill in the date that he says you're fit to return to work. don't leave it blank, your employers seem to be sticklers for details.
