How can you control your emotions?!

Question: I am incredibly emotional about things... sad things... I should say... The funny thing is that I want to pursue the occupations that require you to control your emotions...example:

EMT - Paramedic
Police Officer - Law Enforcement
Counselor
Abuse Advocate

Any advice? I don't want to rely on medicine if I don't have to!

I don't know how old you are, but as one gets older the control of the emotions comes easier. I got a job for an ambulance service when I was in my 20s. My job was to pick up DOAs (dead people). I was really upset at first, but I got used to it and I guess it makes you a little more resiliant about things like that. I just say that age is the best way to deal with thing...and faith. Knowing that everything happens for a reason even if we don't know what it is and the fact that sometimes there are things we can't do anything about can help tremendously. Also, read the Serenity Prayer....really, it does help us to figure out what we need to get upset over and what we need to just let go of. Ya know? I hope that helps, but if you are wanting to persue these occupations in the future....I think it's wonderful. You must be a loving and caring person. I admire you for that.

i used to get drunk but then I got a DUI and if i the violate absolute sobriety of my probation, i have to serve 6 months county jail

I'm just like you -- I cry easily and was going for a 911 position and was thinking - damn, can I handle it without breaking down? I WISH there WAS a pill for it.
My husband says I'm just very "sensitive" and that's not a bad thing...unless it happens to them. I feel your pain. :)

I know people in all of those professions. I used to be a job counselor, myself, which is also full of sad stories. After a while, you just toughen up. Occasionally, a particular person or situation will lay you low, but it happens less often the more you do your job. Some situations are so horrible, they stick with you forever, and there's nothing you can do about it but be grateful that you have a tender heart. It's much better than having a hard heart.

By thinking first before reacting. Keeping your composure.

I have been going through a workbook called "Don't Let Your Emotions Run Your Life" and it has helped me a lot in a lot of ways.

don't listen what people say about you
