Smoking is an addiction, they would need a cigarette even if they didn't have sex. Addiction is a process that not only involves conditioning; addictive drugs not only modify behavior. It modifies the brain itself, all the way down to the cellular level; nicotine acts on specific receptors where it adheres to the membranes of certain (brain) neurons.
